Types of award

Applications for funding from Deafness Research UK must demonstrate how the research fits with the charity's research strategy and priority areas.

However, these priority areas are not exhaustive and promising work outside of these areas can occasionally be considered.

Please note: with the exception of travel grants and special schemes, grants are only available for work within recognised research facilities or hospitals in the UK.

We make the following types of award

Project grants (£15,000 and over)

Normally one or two year awards in support of one precisely formulated line of research.

Small Grants (less than £15,000)

Grants to help researchers meet urgent requirements or conduct pilot studies. A fast-track peer review procedure exists for applications at this level.

Equipment Grants

Applications are assessed on the basis of the research case.

Postgraduate Studentships

Three-year awards based on MRC rates. Applications should be from prospective supervisors.

Travel Grants

Awards up to £750 available to grant-holders and others for meetings and collaborative visits.

Grants for Infrastructure

Occasionally, grants may be made to provide facilities (equipment, accommodation, and/or support staff) for a research group rather than for a named project.

Meetings

To promote discussion in areas where it is felt important to stimulate research, review future directions or improve communication between researchers.

Vacation scholarships

The scholarships are intended to provide promising undergraduates with hands-on research experience during the summer vacation. Applications should be submitted by potential supervisors with hearing research teams at UK universities.
